On our summer road trip through Montana, my friend Jasmine and I were traveling with our daughters when we made a one-night stop in Helena. And while Helena was initially more of a stop along our route than the main destination, our stay at Bell Hotel ended up being one of those places that made me wish we had a little more time. Located at 40 E. Lyndale Avenue in Helena, Montana, Bell Hotel is a small, locally owned boutique hotel with just 14 rooms. It combines the nostalgia of a classic roadside motel with colorful, modern design and an emphasis on everything local. After days spent road-tripping through the West with two kids, it was exactly the kind of easy, comfortable stop we needed.
A New Boutique Hotel With Roots in Helena History

One of the things I loved most about Bell Hotel is that it doesn’t feel like a hotel you could pick up and place in any city. The property takes its name from the Bell Motel, which occupied this site beginning in the 1950s. Today’s Bell Hotel reimagines that piece of Helena history as a modern boutique stay while keeping some of that classic roadside-motel personality. The current hotel opened to its first guests in June 2026, making our summer visit one of its first months welcoming travelers.
With only 14 rooms, Bell Hotel feels much more intimate than a traditional chain hotel. There’s personality everywhere you look—from the artwork and playful design choices to the locally sourced treats and thoughtful details throughout the property. It feels distinctly Montana, but more specifically, distinctly Helena.

Our One-Night Stay at Bell Hotel

We arrived in Helena in the middle of a much bigger road trip through Wyoming, Montana, and the Canadian Rockies. Jasmine and I were traveling together with our daughters, which meant our days usually involved some combination of driving, exploring, unpacking, repacking and figuring out where everyone was going to eat next. Bell Hotel made our night in Helena incredibly easy. The property has the convenience I love about classic roadside hotels—you can park close to your room, unload your bags and settle in without navigating a massive hotel—but the interiors feel much more intentional and elevated.

Each room even comes with its own designated parking space, which is one of those small details you appreciate considerably more when you’re traveling with kids and a car full of luggage. The overall atmosphere is relaxed and playful rather than overly polished or formal. It felt like a place where we could actually settle in for the evening instead of worrying about keeping two kids perfectly quiet in an upscale hotel lobby.

The Rooms at Bell Hotel

Bell Hotel offers just 14 guest rooms, which adds to the intimate feel of the property. The rooms continue the hotel’s eclectic, modern aesthetic while incorporating local touches, including Montana-made products, artwork and treats. I always notice the small details when I stay somewhere, and Bell Hotel clearly understands that those details are often what make a property memorable. Instead of feeling like another standardized hotel room, the space felt connected to the destination we were visiting.

For families visiting Helena, Bell Hotel also offers Queen Double rooms, including an ADA-accessible Queen Double on the main floor. If you’re planning a stay with children, I’d recommend checking the available room configurations when booking to find the best option for your family.

More Than Just a Hotel Room

One of my favorite things about Bell Hotel is the way the property encourages guests to actually use the shared spaces. The main Lobby Lounge is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., while smaller “Mini Lobbies” on the first and second floors are available 24/7. These spaces have things like snacks, ice, trail maps, games, books, crafts and local recommendations. When you’re traveling with kids, having somewhere besides the hotel room to hang out can make a surprisingly big difference.
It also fits perfectly with Bell Hotel’s overall approach. The property isn’t trying to keep you inside the hotel for your entire stay. Instead, it feels designed to serve as a fun home base while encouraging you to get out and experience Helena.
A Hotel That Celebrates Local Helena Businesses
Bell Hotel doesn’t operate a traditional hotel restaurant, but that’s actually part of its charm. Instead, the hotel highlights food from local Helena businesses. Guests can find treats like handmade Pop-Tarts from The Vanilla Bean, signature chocolate cake from Park Avenue Bakery, grab-and-go options from Montana Snacks and other local favorites. There’s even an ice cream truck at the property. This focus on local businesses extends throughout the hotel, from the food to the artwork and recommendations for what to do around Helena.
For me, that’s one of the biggest advantages of choosing an independent boutique hotel when traveling. You’re not just sleeping in the destination—you’re getting little introductions to the people and businesses that make the destination unique.
The Location: Exploring Helena From Bell Hotel
Bell Hotel’s location is another reason it works so well for a Montana road trip. The property sits beside Memorial Park and offers easy access to both downtown Helena and the area’s outdoor recreation. Helena is one of those cities where you can spend part of your day exploring restaurants, shops and local history and then quickly trade downtown streets for mountain trails. Nearby adventures include hiking and biking around Mount Helena and Mount Ascension, while downtown Helena offers local restaurants, breweries, shops and historic architecture. That combination makes Bell Hotel especially appealing if your version of a city trip still needs to include some time outside. And if you’re traveling with kids during the summer, Last Chance Splash Waterpark and Pool is just a short walk through the park from the hotel.
Thoughtful Amenities at Bell Hotel
Bell Hotel isn’t a sprawling resort packed with amenities, and that’s not what it’s trying to be. Instead, the property focuses on smaller details that make a road-trip stay easier and more memorable. Some of the amenities and features include:

- A designated parking space for each room
- Main Lobby Lounge
- 24/7 Mini Lobbies

Is Bell Hotel Good for Families?
Based on our stay, yes—especially for families who prefer smaller, more relaxed properties over traditional chain hotels. Traveling with Jasmine and our daughters meant we weren’t looking for an ultra-formal hotel experience. We wanted somewhere comfortable, convenient and interesting where the girls could relax after being on the road. The games and crafts in the Mini Lobbies, nearby park, walkability and easy parking all add to the family-friendly experience.
There isn’t a pool or traditional hotel gym, so families specifically looking for a resort-style stay may want to keep that in mind. However, during the summer, the nearby Last Chance Splash Waterpark offers another option for getting in the water. For an outdoors-focused Montana road trip, I’d personally take the personality and location over another generic hotel pool.
Why Bell Hotel Stood Out to Me
I stay in a lot of hotels while traveling, and the properties I remember aren’t necessarily the biggest or most luxurious. They’re usually the ones that have a clear sense of place. Bell Hotel has that.
It takes the nostalgic idea of the American roadside motel and gives it a modern, playful Montana personality. More importantly, it doesn’t try to separate itself from Helena. It actively connects guests with the city through local food, artwork, businesses, trails and recommendations. Even though we only stayed for one night, it felt less like a place we stopped to sleep and more like part of the road-trip experience itself.
Is Bell Hotel Helena Worth Staying At?
If you’re searching for where to stay in Helena, Montana, particularly if you love independent hotels with personality, I would absolutely put Bell Hotel on your list. It’s especially well suited for road trippers, couples, families and outdoor travelers who want a comfortable home base without sacrificing character.
Our night in Helena was only one small piece of a much bigger summer adventure with Jasmine and our girls, but Bell Hotel was exactly what I love finding on a road trip: a property that makes even a quick overnight stop feel like part of the story.
Sometimes the places between the major destinations end up surprising you the most. And Bell Hotel made Helena feel like somewhere I’d happily stop again.
