Explore the perfect fall weekend in Ellicottville, NY, including where to stay, Pumpkinville, downtown, and tips for planning a getaway.
There’s something about a mountain town in September that feels like the beginning of a new season before the leaves even fully start to change.
For my 32nd birthday, I traded a big celebration for something that felt much more like me: a girls’ weekend in Ellicottville, New York, with my 10-year-old daughter, Lily. Just a few hours from Cleveland, Ellicottville is one of those destinations that makes an easy weekend getaway feel like you traveled much farther from home. There are rolling hills, mountain views, locally owned shops and restaurants, outdoor adventures, and a downtown small enough that you can park the car and spend an afternoon wandering. While Ellicottville might be best known as one of Western New York’s ski towns, our September visit reminded me that this little mountain village deserves a spot on your itinerary long before the snow starts falling. If you’re planning a weekend in Ellicottville, New York—especially a fall getaway—here’s a look at our mother-daughter trip and how to plan your own.
Why Visit Ellicottville, New York?
Ellicottville sits in Western New York, south of Buffalo, surrounded by the rolling hills of Cattaraugus County. In winter, the area transforms into a hub for skiing and snowboarding. Outside of ski season, though, you get to experience a completely different side of Ellicottville: hiking, mountain biking, scenic drives, patios, local shopping and the kind of slow mornings that mountain towns seem to do particularly well.

Downtown Ellicottville is compact and walkable, with restaurants, boutiques and local businesses concentrated within just a few blocks. That makes it especially easy for a short weekend getaway when you want plenty to do without spending half the trip driving from one stop to another. For us, that was exactly the point. This wasn’t a trip where I wanted to race through a checklist. I wanted time with Lily, time behind my camera and a few days to celebrate another trip around the sun somewhere that felt fun without being complicated.
Where to Stay in Ellicottville: The Lincoln Boutique Motel
Our home base for the weekend was The Lincoln Boutique Motel, located directly across from Holiday Valley and less than a mile from the Village of Ellicottville. The property takes the nostalgia of a classic roadside motel and gives it a completely modern personality. Instead of feeling cookie-cutter, The Lincoln leans into bold branding, thoughtful details and renovated rooms that make the property feel fun from the moment you arrive. The location was one of my favorite parts.

Being across from Holiday Valley puts you right next to many of the outdoor experiences people travel to Ellicottville for, while downtown is close enough that you can easily bounce between the village and the mountains throughout the weekend. The motel offers several room configurations, including king rooms, double queen rooms and a larger two-bedroom suite, making it an option for everything from couples’ weekends to family trips and girls’ getaways.
As a photographer, I also loved seeing a property that wasn’t afraid to have a personality. The design gives you a sense of place rather than making you feel like you could be staying anywhere. For a short Ellicottville weekend, location matters—and The Lincoln made an incredibly convenient home base.

Exploring Downtown Ellicottville
One of the best things to do in Ellicottville is also one of the simplest: give yourself time to wander. The village is the kind of place where you don’t necessarily need a strict itinerary. Park the car, grab something to eat, wander through the locally owned shops and see where the afternoon takes you. That slower pace was part of what I loved about this trip. So much of travel revolves around fitting as much as possible into 48 hours. But sometimes the best weekend itinerary isn’t the one with 17 different stops.
It’s the one where you actually remember the conversations you had, the places you wandered into and what the air felt like as summer started giving way to fall. Ellicottville lends itself to exactly that kind of trip.
Ellicottville Isn’t Just a Winter Destination
It would be easy to think of Ellicottville strictly as a ski destination, but visiting before winter gave us the chance to experience another side of the area. Holiday Valley sits just outside the village, while the surrounding region offers plenty of opportunities to hike, bike, explore and simply spend time outside.
And then there’s fall. Western New York’s rolling terrain makes Ellicottville especially beautiful as the seasons begin to change. Cool mornings, changing leaves and nearby farms make it an easy choice for a fall road trip. If you’re someone who loves combining outdoor adventure with good food, cute shops and a cozy place to stay at the end of the day, Ellicottville makes it incredibly easy to do all of those things in one weekend.
Day One: Arrive + Explore Downtown Ellicottville
After arriving in Ellicottville, check into The Lincoln Boutique Motel and spend your first afternoon getting acquainted with the village. This is the perfect time to explore downtown without an agenda. Walk through the village, stop inside the boutiques and locally owned shops, grab dinner and enjoy the mountain-town atmosphere. Keeping the first day relatively open also gives you some flexibility depending on what time you arrive in Ellicottville. Rather than trying to squeeze several attractions into your first afternoon, use it to settle in and get a feel for the town. Then get some sleep, because Day Two is all about fall.
Day Two: Spend the Day at Pumpkinville
If you’re visiting Ellicottville during fall, dedicate an entire day to Pumpkinville. Located a short drive from Ellicottville in Great Valley, Pumpkinville is the kind of place that captures everything I love about fall in Western New York. Pumpkins. Crisp September air. Farm activities. Seasonal treats. And that nostalgic fall feeling that makes you want to throw on a sweater and spend the entire day outside.
This was exactly the kind of day I wanted for my birthday weekend with Lily—less about rushing from one attraction to another and more about leaning all the way into the season together. Rather than treating Pumpkinville as a quick stop on an already-packed Ellicottville itinerary, give yourself several hours to explore. It’s especially worth adding to your trip if you’re visiting Ellicottville with kids or planning a mother-daughter fall getaway. One of my favorite things about traveling with Lily is finding experiences that we can genuinely enjoy together. At 10, she’s old enough that our trips have started to feel less like traveling with a kid and more like actual girls’ trips.
A day at Pumpkinville fit perfectly into that. We could slow down, embrace all the cheesy fall fun and simply enjoy being together without worrying about where we needed to be next. After spending the day soaking up every bit of fall, head back toward Ellicottville for dinner and another evening in the village. If you’re searching for fall things to do near Ellicottville, New York, Pumpkinville absolutely deserves a spot on your weekend itinerary.
Day Three: Have a Slow Morning in Ellicottville
Don’t overbook your final morning. Grab breakfast or coffee, take another walk through downtown Ellicottville and revisit any shops you didn’t have time for on your first day. Then check out of The Lincoln and start the drive home. For a two-night fall getaway, this itinerary gives you a little bit of everything: a charming Western New York mountain town, local shopping and dining, a full day of quintessential fall fun and, most importantly, enough breathing room to actually enjoy the weekend.
The Perfect Mother-Daughter Weekend
Some trips are about the destination. Others become important because of when they happen. This one was both. I took these few days just before turning 32, and having Lily there made the weekend feel less like a birthday trip and more like a little marker between chapters. As she gets older, I’m increasingly aware that there are only so many years when I get to say, “Want to go on a girls’ trip this weekend?” and have her pack a bag and come along.
We’ve traveled thousands of miles together. We’ve hiked mountains, paddled alpine lakes, slept in cabins and road-tripped across countries. But I’ve learned that our trips don’t have to be huge to matter. Sometimes it’s simply driving a few hours from home, checking into a fun motel, putting on cute outfits, exploring a new town and spending uninterrupted time together. That’s what I want her to remember about growing up: not necessarily every place we went, but that we went.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Ellicottville?
While we visited Ellicottville in September, if I were planning this trip again specifically for a fall getaway, I’d wait until at least early to mid-October. September sounded perfect in theory, but in reality, our weekend felt much more like summer than fall. Temperatures were warmer than I would have liked, and despite dreaming of colorful mountain views and changing leaves, there was virtually no fall foliage yet.
We still had an incredible weekend—and Pumpkinville definitely helped bring the fall vibes (despite the wicked heat that day)—but if you’re picturing crisp mornings, sweaters, colorful leaves and that quintessential Western New York autumn atmosphere, I’d aim for mid-October rather than September.
That timing should also give you a better chance of experiencing fall color throughout the rolling hills surrounding Ellicottville. Of course, peak foliage varies from year to year depending on weather conditions, so it’s always worth checking current foliage reports before your trip.
Fall: For the full fall experience, I’d personally target mid-October. Pair a day exploring Ellicottville with a visit to Pumpkinville, scenic drives through Western New York and plenty of time outside enjoying the changing leaves.
Winter: Ellicottville transforms into a ski town once the snow arrives, making winter a great time for skiing, snowboarding and après-ski weekends around Holiday Valley.
Spring and summer: If hiking, biking and warm-weather outdoor recreation are more your speed, Ellicottville is still worth visiting—you’ll just get a very different experience from the cozy fall mountain-town getaway.
So, would I visit Ellicottville in September again? Absolutely. But would I choose September if my main goal were peak fall vibes and foliage? Probably not. For that trip, I’d wait a few more weeks and plan an Ellicottville weekend in mid-October.
How Long Do You Need in Ellicottville?
For a first visit, I think two nights is perfect. A weekend gives you enough time to explore downtown Ellicottville, spend a day experiencing the surrounding area and still leave room in the schedule to slow down. If you’re traveling from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo or elsewhere in Western New York, Ellicottville is particularly well suited for a spontaneous road trip because you don’t need to dedicate an entire week to make the drive worthwhile. With an extra day or two, you could easily expand your trip into a larger Western New York road trip and explore more of Cattaraugus County.
Is Ellicottville Worth Visiting in the Fall?
If you love small towns, outdoor adventure and destinations that let you combine a little bit of everything into one weekend, Ellicottville deserves a spot on your Western New York fall road-trip list. It’s close enough to make an easy weekend getaway from Cleveland, yet different enough from home to feel like you’ve actually gone somewhere. Come in early October for those first hints of fall. Visit later in the season for changing leaves and crisp mountain air. Return in winter with skis strapped to the roof. But don’t make the mistake of thinking Ellicottville is only worth visiting when there’s snow on the ground.
For us, it was exactly what I wanted for my 32nd birthday: a few days away, a mountain town to explore, fall memories to make, my camera in my hand and my favorite girl beside me. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.
