Ellicottville: A Brief History
Ellicottville, New York, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. It was named after Joseph Ellicott, the chief surveyor of the Holland Land Company, which played a significant role in the settlement of Western New York. The village was officially incorporated in 1837. Originally, Ellicottville served as a center for trade and commerce due to its strategic location. The town’s growth was further fueled by the arrival of the Erie Railroad in the mid-1800s, facilitating transportation and connecting Ellicottville to broader markets. Throughout its history, Ellicottville experienced economic shifts, including the rise and fall of industries such as logging and tanning. However, the town’s enduring charm and natural beauty have consistently attracted visitors. In the latter half of the 20th century, Ellicottville transformed into a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts with the development of ski resorts like Holiday Valley and HoliMont. Today, Ellicottville maintains its historic character while thriving as a year-round destination, offering outdoor activities, festivals, and a welcoming community for residents and visitors alike.
