Did I Mention Kid-friendly options too?
As I mentioned in my most recent article, I am a big fan of the Colorado Springs area and as if there wasn’t enough right there, there’s even more exploring to be had within an easy ‘day trip’ distance. Below I have covered what I believe to truly be two of the most EPIC (and kid-friendly) day trips that are easily feasible from Colorado Springs. So without further ado…
Paint Mines Interpretive Park

The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is a unique and visually stunning natural area located in El Paso County, Colorado, near the town of Calhan. It is known for its colorful and intricate geological formations, including hoodoos, spires, and various rock formations that have been eroded over millions of years. The park is named after the colorful clays found in the area, which have been historically used for creating pigments by Native American tribes and settlers.
Key features of the Paint Mines Interpretive Park include:
- Geological Formations: The park is renowned for its vibrant and diverse rock formations in shades of red, orange, purple, and white. These formations were created through erosion and weathering over a long period of time.
- Hiking Trails: The park offers a network of hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the unique rock formations up close. The trails lead visitors through the various geological features and provide opportunities for photography and exploration.
- Archaeological and Historical Significance: The area holds cultural significance for Native American tribes and early settlers who used the colorful clays for various purposes, including pottery and ceremonial activities. Some archaeological artifacts and traces of human activity can still be found in the park.
- Educational Opportunities: The “interpretive” aspect of the park’s name refers to its role in education. The park provides information about its geological, cultural, and historical aspects through interpretive signs and displays, helping visitors better understand the significance of the area.
- Photography: The unique and vibrant rock formations make the Paint Mines Interpretive Park a popular destination for photographers seeking to capture the striking beauty of the landscape.
- Conservation and Protection: The park is managed to preserve its natural and cultural values. Visitors are encouraged to respect the park’s rules and guidelines to help ensure the preservation of its fragile formations.
Visiting the Paint Mines Interpretive Park offers an opportunity to experience a distinct and lesser-known natural wonder in Colorado. It’s a great place for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, photographers, and those interested in geology and history. Keep in mind that the park’s terrain can be uneven, so wearing appropriate footwear and being prepared for varying weather conditions is (VERY) advisable! Below I have provided links to my hiking boots (currently on sale for 40% off!) as well as the other gear I have taken on every single hike since 2019 (and still going strong).
